How do Universities know what units you’ve taken before high school graduation?
I took 32 units at a community college before graduating. I heard that colleges won’t accept a lot of the units taken before graduation. I’ve spent 2 years going to college so I could get a jumpstart to college and I was NEVER told this. Except for the fact I’m extremely upset right now, I’m wondering if that specification goes for all Universities, and why units (or some units) taken before hs graduation don’t count as transfer units?
because the uni thinks the subjects u took arent on par with the subjects they offer since it was done at a community college level. u can only skip subjects in uni / shorten ur time at uni if the subjects u took are at University level eg. if u transferred from 1 uni to another or u transferred courses within the same uni or to another uni
Why are the top-tier universities generally concentrated in the Northeast and California?
The Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, CalTech, and hordes of elite liberal arts schools. There are very good ones in the Midwest and South, but I don’t think it’s a lie to say that most of American’s best, top-tier Universities are concentrated in the Northeast and California. Any reason for this?
I agree with everyone else on why the east coast has strong schools: the schools are older. When a new school starts, it has to find professors and students, but those people would usually rather go to a more established school. So the first generation of professors and students at a new school will typically be worse professors and students. And then the next generation of students and professors will prefer to go to the better school, which just perpetuates the newer school being worse. It can take a long time to dig out of such a reputation and a long time for a school with a good reputation to dig itself into a hole.
As far as the west coast schools, it is certainly true that CA throws money at its public schools, so they tend to be good. But Stanford and Caltech are both private. I think the real reason CA has some good schools is the strength of the economy. Let me give you an example. Caltech rose to prominence because California spent money on a fancy telescope in the mountains just outside of LA. They needed some scientists to run the telescope, so they went to the local college (at that point named Throop College) and gave them money to hire some top-notch telescope scientists. Over time, other top-notch scientists decided to join their colleagues at Throop, and before long it became a great science University (and was renamed Caltech). But if the economy in CA had not been strong enough for there to be equipment and facilities that would draw some top talent, then Caltech would have never been more than a local college.
So I think to get a great university, you need to have something that attracts some top talent. Once you have some top talent, more top talent will join up and you have the beginnings of a great reputation. The main things that attract talent are reputation and money. And the east coast and CA are the regions that have had access to these commodities. You might expect the south to have equally strong universities, given the regions age, but I think there was not as much of a social pressure to be well educated in the south as there was 100 or 200 years ago in the north. So culture also plays a role. The central part of the country is simply too new and not dense enough to have significant financial resources for a strong universities.
Does the sixth form college you go to affect your chances at a top university?
I’m currently in year eleven and making college applications. I’m on course to getting 13 A* GCSEs at a comprehensive secondary school.
I’ve also heard that going to non-selective college and getting the top grades (e.g. AAA) suggests you did it on your own merits, as opposed to going to a grammar school.
I’ll be extremely grateful for any responses.
I don’t think it affects uni applications at all, its just the grades you get and your personal statement that they will be looking at!! As long as you do wel then that fine!

Roosevelt University in Chicago for MBA or John Marshall Law School for Masters in Intellectual Property?
I have a Bachelors from The UnivUniversity of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I am currently a few weeks away from my Paralegals Certificate from Roosevelt University. I am interested in going to law school in a year or two. Now, my question is, should I attend Roosevelt University for a MBA or John Marshall Law School for a Masters in Intellectual Property Law?
Please give me some advice. Thanks.
If your plan is to go to law school, why are you loading up on these other degrees? Plenty of schools offer JD/MBA programs, and you can always take intellectual property electives, so all you’re doing is loading up on extra debt. I think you’d be better off taking your certificate and getting some practical experience before you apply.
What is the ranking for the Open University?
Sorry if this is a silly question but other uni’s have rankings ie Guardian League table, but how come the Open University isn’t included? And does anyone know what number it stands at anyway?
Cheers!
The O.U. doesn’t seem to be in the Guardian or the Times league tables and I think this is because it cannot be compared with other Universities on equal factors.
For example, the O.U does not deliver ‘teaching’ as such, more you are supported by a tutor whilst you teach yourself. It also cannot be graded on aspects such as accommodation, facilities and entry standards (as literally anyone can study with them). The O.U would also score low on things like student:staff ratio simply because there’s no need for a lot of staff to deliver lectures etc. The O.U would also possibly have a higher drop-out rate simply because so many of it’s students work full time, quite the opposite to ‘brick’ uni students! To attempt to compare the O.U with ‘brick’ Universities in a competitive fashion would be unfair.
However, the O.U usually scores very high on the survey of ‘student satisfaction’ and I believe it was 2nd highest ranking this year and 1st in the last few years.
I’m not sure if that’s the definitive answer to your question but I feel the reason is probably along those lines!

can the university always see what is on my laptop?
I was just curious if they could always see what i was doing on my computer. Its a wireless internet connection in the dorms. Im not asking because i am doing anything wrong i am just wondering. I assume they could find out what i am currently doing but how far back. Could they see what i did last week?
No, they can’t legally. If they do, they are breaking the law.
However, they CAN see what you are searching for on the internet if they want to, but in my experience they don’t usually bother unless you are doing something illegal.
They can’t tell what is actually ON your laptop either. Like they cannot tell what programs you have or what pictures, etc.
What’s the minimum GPA you need to get in to the University of Southern California (USC)?
What’s the minimum GPA you need to get in to The UnivUniversity of Southern California (USC)?
It’s not all that selective…. While I’m sure they have no hard-and-fast minimum, the average high school GPA of newly admitted students is 3.8.
They seem to care just as much about generating revenue by maintaining relations, though; a full 21% of their students are the children of alumni.
Can a university search for your history of prior colleges you attended?
I am planning to apply to an out of state University and have some bad history I don’t want to show them. Well pretty much I went to a community college in the summer and completely bombed the classes twice. Thanks for any help.
You are better off coming clean. Seriously, explain why you lost interest in the classes.
