What are the Universities close to Irvine in California?

with 2 comments

I want to apply for the closest Universities near Irvine in California for my master’s.
Would you please give a list of universities near there by distance order?

Thank’s.

UC Irvine
Cal State Long Beach
Cal State Poly
Orange

After that things get far. Some of these are 30 miles, but understand in California 30 miles is a trip to a movie theater!

We used to do 50 miles each way to work!

Technically Cal State LA is not all that far

Neither is UC Riverside or UC San Bernardino

I mean you’re talking 1/2 hour drive each way, but that’s how long it takes to get on the Pirates of the Carribean from the time you get into line!

How does it make you feel that the majority of student in the top universities are children of immigrants?

with 11 comments

Most students at Berkeley and other universities such as Harvard and Princeton are made up of the children of foreign born parents. I study at The UnivUniversity of California at Berkeley. 45 percent of the school is first generation asian, 13 percent Hispanic most of which are children of illegal parents, 5 percent black, and the rest are Caucasian of european decent. 30 years ago it was about 90 percent "white". What does this show for the future of higher education and the role of immigration?

Your statistics are VERY faulty. While the designated ethnic breakdown at Berkeley seems right (45% Asian/Pacific Island – that is NOT "first (or even second) generation" Asian. That is the total cited ethnic background of the student body. Comparable statistics for some other "top Universities" are:
Harvard – 13% Asian and 77% White
Yale – 11% Asian and 51% White
Princeton – 11% Asian and 52% White
As at Berkeley, these are the self-reported ethnic background of the students and has absolutely nothing to do with any "immigrant" status.

As the old witticism says: "Figures don’t lie but liars often figure." And as Mark Twain observed: "There are three kinds of lies – lies, damned lies, and statistics."

Be more careful before you try to inflame people with your ugly superstitions.

Do I have what it takes to go to a top university?

with 5 comments

I am currently a junior at a decent public high school-ranked 130ish, in Tulsa,Oklahoma, which I feel is an under represented area. Here is my class schedule and the classes I am signed up for my senior year, and the grades earned.
I received 4 B’s 3 A’s my freshman year in which i took pre ap and one ap class, sophomore year i recieved all A’s with 3 pre ap, and one AP class, junior year 4 ap classes one pre ap, with all A’s. Senior Year i will have 4 ap and hope to have all a’s again.
I scored a 30 on the ACT which I have taken once, and got a 1300 on the old SAT. What do you think my chances are for acceptance to UPENN(1st Choice), Stanford,UCSD,UChicago,NYU,Northwestern,Berkeley? I am a nationally ranked junior tennis player-have been playing competitively since elementary, Class Treasurer, Stu-Co Chair, Tennis Booster President, hospital volunteering, though Tennis is my main passion and i hope it stands out. Do you think with this package i can get in?
Thank you very much for your responses so far. I also forgot to mention that I have recieved 5′s on both AP tests I have taken so far, and I hope to continue with straight 5′s.One part I forgot to add is that I only took Algebra I as a 9th grader. How much will this hurt my chances?
And again, I forgot to mention that I am partially Native American and have a Native American Card. Do you think this will help?

I think you can get in, but 2008 is expected to be the hardest year for college applicants (Harvard and Yale turned down 2400s this year). You’re chances are better for NYU and Northwestern(I’m assuming is Nor). I don’t know much about UCSD. UPenn, Stanford and UChicago seem to be a bit more of a reach but you could definately still get in. Are you interested in playing tennis?? If so that could help you! E-mail the tennis coaches and send them tapes or information about you. If they believe you could be a walk-on they will campaign for your acceptance. Or you could get recruited which would definately help your chances. You might want to apply to a couple of less competitive schools as safeties since the competition has been ridiculous the past couple of years.
With the native american thing you should look at applying to Dartmouth!! They started as a University that was for teaching native americans and they like keeping the tradition of having native americans attend the school. Dartmouth is a great school, but looking at the others you applied to it might be smaller than you’re looking for.
Good job with the 5′s they like to see that!

Good Luck!

i would go for uts in sydney and do design in visual communication. there are also a few private colleges but i wouldnt know whats best, maybe billy blue.
p.s you probably have better high school subjects compared to us but if it’s between art history and programming, i would go programming because you’ll probably learn of a few important movements and artists in ‘Art’ and you would most likely be concentrating more on designers in uni.

hope that helps.

They also list several Restricted Electives that the college will say "you have to take these courses too."

What are every ones predictions on University of Tennessee’s next 4 games?

with 9 comments

Auburn (home), Georgia (home), Alabama (away), and South Carolina (home)
0-4! This is a UT team that lost to a so-so UCLA team and let an Ohio team last week throw for over 300 yards.
BOTH AT HOME!

Auburn – I think Jonathan Crompton doesn’t have enough talent to keep an Auburn secondary that intercepted 5 West Virginia passes. This is the best defense AU has faced, but the fast pace will probably take a toll on a beaten-up UT defense.
Auburn 31, Tennessee 20

Georgia – Crompton improves and the Vols fight hard, but UGA is probably better on offense and they win a defensive slugfest.
UGA 16, Tennessee 14

Alabama – The Crimson Tide’s rolling. Maybe the best team in the SEC while Tebow’s out. It’s at Bryant-Denny.
Alabama 37, Tennessee 13

South Carolina – They’re overrated and the game’s at Neyland. Bad combo for the Cocks. I like UT by a bunch in this game.
Tennessee 31, South Carolina 10
