Are you allowed to do undergraduate research outside of your university?

with one comment

Do you HAVE to do your research with someone on campus? I want to research astrophysics but USF does not have astrophysics research. I start there in the fall. Do i still have the opportunity to do astrophysics research?

As you can probably tell, i don’t really understand what exactly undergraduate research is.

If you already knew you wanted to study astrophysics, you probably shouldn’t have picked a school that doesn’t offer it. Do you mean The UnivUniversity of South Florida or the University of San Fransisco? Yes, you can do research off campus, but it’s a lot easier to get one of those positions if you’ve already done research on campus. Look into REU programs (research experience for undergraduates); those applications are due in February. I’d recommend the SARA REU program if you meant FL; they have several in Florida and the surrounding states. And in the mean time, try to get some experience in your own department, even if it’s not the exact field you’re interested in. If you’re lucky, you might find a professor willing to let you work in their lab next summer even with limited experience.

this depends on the country, and The UnivUniversity!

sorry i can’t give you better advice, haha. but you really need to narrow it down first. the first answerer gave a lot of really good advice as to specific things you will need. but you will have to make sure that you have whatever your university is asking for – it may differ from whatever we tell you here.

can i get into the university of iowa with a 2.7 gpa and 23 act?

The average ACT is 23-28 for The UnivUniversity, so that is pretty ideal. I feel like their minimum GPA is at least 3.0, but I can’t be sure.

Is the Masters programme in Oil and Gas Engineering at the Memorial University of Newfoundland recognised?

with one comment

"Recognized" by whom?

The school and the Masters programmes it offers are fully accredited.
So, yes it is a legitimate program at an excellent University.

Why do people waste the time of going to community college, why not go straight to university after HS?

with 7 comments

1) Community college is thousands of dollars cheaper than a 4-year college and some people don’t have tons of money to spend.

2) Community college is usually open admission and some students that didn’t do so well in HS can’t get accepted to a 4-year without some college level work first.

3) There are more community colleges out there than 4-year colleges and they are located locally. Some people can’t leave home for job or family reasons to attend a 4-year right away.

4) Community colleges teach more courses in the evening and on weekends which allows a scheduling flexibility for people that have to work.

5) Community colleges teach vocational/occupational programs that the 4-year colleges don’t teach. Some people have noticed that the CC grad with an ASN and an RN license makes way more than someone with a BA in Women’s Studies and the RN can find a job.

6) Community colleges tend to be commuter schools. Some people aren’t even slightly interested in "the scene" to be found at a 4-year college.

7) Far more people start college each year than manage to graduate. Some people recognize that, no matter how much we want to think so, all people aren’t equal. That means that some people don’t need to go to a 4-year college. The smart group of those people know that it’s better to go to community college and graduate than to go to the 4-year college and drop out with $50,000 spent on pretty much nothing.

There are tons of good reasons to go to a community college. Did I mention that community college is thousands of dollars cheaper than the typical 4-year college?

Consider this:
If John goes to the community college for 2 years and then The UnivUniversity of Yourstate for two years and gets his bachelor’s degree; while Jane goes to the exact same University of Yourstate for four years and gets her bachelor’s degree – which of the two has a bachelor’s degree? Right, they both have the same diploma and in the same amount of time.

Who got the better deal if John paid a total of $25,000 for his and Jane paid a total of $50,000 for hers? It’s the same diploma but Jane paid double for hers. Hmmmmm I wonder if Jane got double the education for her money? I bet Jane went to better parties though. ?
