Does the Ranking of your University matter?
The University I go to is Ok, but no where near the best, My grades are average, in a-levels I got all BBB’S, I am nearly finishing Uni, and I want to pursue a career in Psychology and I am aiming for a 2.1, degree………… BUT i am worried that when I apply for jobs they will judge me on the University i chose to go.
it depends, some potential employers may be impressed if you went to cambridge or something fancy as it takes a lot of work, others may judge this choice as being too educational or as you being priviliged and not having had to work. the same goes for a lesser known university. it could work either way so it really doesnt matter.
soooo basically, most psychology students graduate with a 2.1 regardless of uni, you just need something else to make you stand out like work experience
what is the ranking of NUS university singapore amogst other universities for mass media?
i just finished with my 12th grade and i need to apply as soon as possible, ive heard alot about NUS but need to know more about other universities.
I believe there isn’t a ranking for Mass Media.. even if there is…. if a university isn’t ranked that highly…it does not indicate that the program is not good…
NUS is the flagship university in Singapore and is one of the best in Asia (sources QS World University Rankings , webometrics and Academic Ranking of World Universities [Shanghai Jiao Tong University] )
It definitely is adequately funded by the government of Singapore and has S$1 billion endowment funds to fall back on. Definitely it has good professors to teach the relevant subjects…. It however does not operate a student-run radio station on campus unlike many of the universities in USA.
Don’t know much about other universities…but other members probably would be able to tell you more….
what is more important when looking for a job, university ranking or major ranking in the uk?
what is more important when looking for a job, University Ranking or major ranking in the uk?
please help x
Thanks JB, well i got accepted into Leicester, Southampton, Cardiff, and Reading, witch would you recommend to me taking into consideration university ranking, course ranking and employment opportunities
Generally, both, but it does depend on the job sector you plan to go into and its relevance to your degree. In a lot of professional sectors, such as law, accountancy, banking etc, recruiters will know which Universities are the best for degrees in law, finance, economics etc, so subject ranking is important. But if you’re planning to go into a more generic field, or you are unlikely to get a job directly relevant to your degree, then the general ranking is more important. Just as an example, Queen Mary is highly ranked for English but not so high generally. Kings College is ranked lowly for English, but is generally ranked quite a bit higher than QM. If you are planning to study English and realistically are unlikely to get a job directly relevant to your degree (most English grads don’t), then Kings would probably look better to most employers than QM. If possible I would recommend going for a uni that is fairly highly ranked both in general and in terms of your subject, rather than one that is very highly ranked in one and very lowly ranked in the other.

The title of a web page is the text that is written between the <TITLE> and </TITLE> tag in the HTML code of a web page. If you write the right text between these tags, your web site can get more targeted visitors.
Why are web page titles so important for your web site success?
- The titles of your web pages are important for search engines
To many search engine spiders the title of a web page is more important than other web page elements. If your web page title contains your most important keywords, it’s likely that the web page will have a good search engine ranking for these keywords.
- The titles of your web pages are important for web surfers
The title of your web site is the first thing web surfers will see from your web site. Many search engines display the title of a web page as the main link to a web site in the search engine result pages.
In addition, the web page title is used when a web surfers bookmarks your web site.
While most search engines don’t allow you to influence the description of your web site, the title of your web site is often listed without any changes.
What does this mean to you?
It’s important that your web pages have compelling titles that are compelling to web surfers and that contain your most important keywords.
For example, if you have a sports shoe shop in London, don’t use this title tag:
Welcome to Smith & Son
People probably won’t click on that link because they don’t know who you are. That web page title doesn’t look very attractive to the average surfer. Better use this title:
Buy sneakers and sports shoes at competitive prices in our shop in London. Nike, Adidas, Reebok and all other major sports shoe brands.
Why is the second title better than the first one?
The second title has many advantages over the first title.
- The second title contains keywords that are important for a sports shoe business: sports shoes, sports shoe, sneakers and several brand names.
The inclusion of these words in the title increase the change of good search engine rankings for these keywords.
- The second title informs web surfers about the purpose of the web site and it gives them a reason to click: Buy sneakers and sports shoes at competitive prices.
- The second title includes geographical information: …in our shop in London. People who live in Chicago are probably not interested in a shop that’s based in London.
The inclusion of “London” in the web page title allows people to quickly find out if it’s worth to visit the web site. In addition, it’s more likely that the web site will be found for a search term such as “shoe shop London“.
Good web page titles can help you to increase your search engine rankings and to get more people to click on your link.

Top 5 Green Energy Companies From 2008
Thousands of organizations and businesses are going the extra mile and spending the extra dollar to buy utility-scale energy from renewable resources. So much so that the United States E.P.A. (Environmental Protection Agency) compiles a quarterly list of the top green power companies from their Green Power Partnership program which came out in July 2008.
Some businesses take diminutive steps towards a green campaign, but these companies are proving their allegiance to a greener environment by voluntarily spending millions of dollars on clean energy.
- Intel purchased 1.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in January 2008. This compensates for 47 percent of the companies overall energy use.
- PepsiCo purchased 1.1 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2007, the equivalent of powering 90,000 homes for an entire year. This accounts for 100 percent of their annual energy use. PepsiCo was named Green Power Partner of the Year in 2007 by the E.P.A.
- U.S. Air Force has already purchasd 9 million kilowatt hours of electricity this year as of July 2008. They have invested in a number of biogas, biomass, geothermal, solar and wind energy providers.
- Wells Fargo has purchased 5.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity from wind energy providers thus far in 2008. They are also a Green Power Partner of the Year in 2007. More than green energy, Wells Fargo has made a number of other commitments to their green campaign including LEED certifying their buildings and offering online account statements.
- Whole Foods Market, the past two years has purchased enough green energy to compensate for 100 percent of their energy use, totalling to over 5 million kilowatt hours annually. The company is also investing in multiple other efforts to reduce their carbon footprint on the environment.
Other organizations ranking high on the E.P.A.’s list are Starbucks, Johnson & Johnson and The UnivUniversity of Pennsylvania.
